Top shot: William Maggs’ image of an oyster bed has scooped a photo competition for schoolkids. Pearl of a photo An image of a quiet oyster bed has nabbed young William Maggs a shoot with professional photographer Ted Scott. The 11-year-old has won the school-aged division of the Manukau Harbour Restoration Society’s first photo competition. William, who lives in Mangere Bridge, took his photo between the Otuataua Stonefields and Puketutu Island. Mr Scott says he picked the image to win because it ‘‘captures the mood of the day’’. The competition was organised to reconnect people with the Manukau Harbour and encourage them to appreciate its beauty and potential, a society spokesperson says. It’s hoped the contest will be held every year from now on. Amber Humphrey and Oxana Repina were runners-up in the schoolaged category for their images of Kiwi Esplanade and a flock of oystercatchers in flight. ❚ Go to photocompetition. mhrs.org.nz to see all the entries.
