Photo: TROELS SOMMERVILLE Chelsea Holmes is obsessed with food. She has been from an early age and has taught herself all the culinary skills she now possesses. Now the 22-year-old Manurewa mum is running cooking classes in her kitchen. From the wonders of the spice- rack to the evils of bottled sauces, Chelsea is teaching the food- challenged to navigate the land- scape of the kitchen. The fortnightly classes started after her friends boyfriends kept telling their girlfriends to take lessons from Chelsea. I have people round for dinner and they always ask: How did you do that? So she decided to help them answer that question. Now she teaches five people during the course of eight lessons about the wonders of the gourmet world. The classes only cost $10 a pop -- just enough to cover the price of the ingredients. They get to take [the food] home, unless they eat it all first, she says. After already dabbling in fashion design, university study and real estate she has found her calling. One of her students, Sarah Urlich, says she was in dire need of lessons. Chelsea s hands-on approach was just the recipe for her. I just don t know how to cook. A lot of people don t know how to cook. She says Chelsea s time study- ing early childhood care helps her to handle a kitchen full of girls. Sometimes we get a bit carried away and Chelsea puts us back in line, says Miss Urlich. But Chelsea has big goals: She wants to eventually end up on television. I don t know where it s going to go, but I ll see where it takes me. When it comes to booking classes it s first in, first served. To sign up for the classes, contact Chelsea at: creativecooks@ hotmail.co.nz O'Ryans Bar: The friendly Irish bar in Manukau.
