We're doing deals or Juniors win gold By ALAN APTED Brook Varney, Erikka- Lee Foketi and Joshua Killian will fly the Manurewa Swimming Club colours at the jun- ior swimming nationals later this month. The trio is among 47 swimmers from Counties Manukau who've quali- fied for the New Zealand junior championships at the West Wave Aquatic centre in Henderson on February 19 and 20. Foketi, 10, will swim the 50-metre backstroke, freestyle and butterfly as well as the 100m back- stroke. Varney and Kil- lian, both 10, each have one event. Varney will swim the 200m breaststroke and Killian the 50m freestyle. The three are coached by Jane Logan whose Manurewa team won 11 gold, five silver and eight bronze medals at the Counties Manukau champs on Auckland Anniversary weekend. Eight-year-old Camp- bell Hulbert came away with six gold medals, a silver and a bronze. Foketi picked up seven medals, including two golds. Varney had two golds among her five medals. Five swimmers from the Papatoetoe Swim- ming Club and three from the Mangere Swim- ming Club are also going to the junior nationals. The Papatoetoe swim- mers are 10-year-olds Danika Ryland-Higgins, Ellen Watson and Robert Alan Fatialofa, 11-year- old Robbie Screen and Casey Rei-Tukimaka, Chelsea Samuel, both 12 years old. Mangere's qualifiers are 12-year-olds Jemuel Nimmo and Caitlin Pritchard. Surprise coaches at camp By ALAN APTED More than 80 children got more than they bargained for when they attended a three-day camp at the Drury Foot- ball Club in January. They ended up getting lessons from All Whites Ivan Vicelich and David Mulligan. Vicelich, Mulligan and strikers Luis Corrales and Manuel Exposito are all from the Auckland City AFC and were guest coaches at the camp.
