Photo: SHANE WENZLICK Brush off those walking shoes or trainers and hit the pave- ment -- it s Round the Bays time again. Entries are now open for the annual fun run and walk along Auckland s waterfront on March 13. It s New Zealand s largest mass-participation sporting event, each year attracting around 40,000 registered entrants and 70,000 participants overall. Those taking part range from elite athletes to babies in pushchairs to centen- arians. Proceeds from this year s run will be divided among charities that benefit children including Koru Care, Kidney Kids and the Waitemata Har- bour Clean-Up Trust. Event spokeswoman San- dra King, Fairfax Media group sales and marketing manager, is encouraging entrants to register on the official website www.round thebays.co.nz. By entering the run via our website you will be help- ing some very worthy organ- isations. Last year our generous participants raised more than $100,000 for children s chari- ties, Ms King says. Registered entrants get a race number which is scanned at the finish line to give an exact race time. Results are listed on the official website after the run. From February 1, the web- site provides a six-week training programme for runners or walkers. So there s plenty of time to get race-ready for those want- ing to improve their fitness. Ports of Auckland is returning as Round the Bays sponsor for the second year. Chief executive Jens Mad- sen says the company is thrilled to be involved again. Auckland s port has been part of the city s waterfront for more than 100 years and it is fitting that we are asso- ciated with this fantastic event that takes place on our doorstep, he says. The run does a magnifi- cent job of showcasing Auck- land s beautiful harbour and waterfront as well providing the thousands of participants with the chance to glimpse our working port facilities. More than 400 port employees and their families took part last year and Mr Madsen will be encouraging a big turnout again this time. Ports of Auckland Round the Bays is owned by Fairfax Media and the Auckland Joggers Club. Sponsors include Ports of Auckland, Pump Water, Mobico and Watercare Services. The 8.4km waterfront route along Quay St and Tamaki Drive to St Heliers is an achievable distance for runners and walkers, the able-bodied and the physic- ally challenged. Ports of Auckland Round the Bays starts at 9.30am on March 13. Entry fees: $10 for children (16 and under) and $15 for adults. Go online to www. roundthebays.co.nz to enter.
