Fundraise without pokies By MELISSA KINEALY It is still possible to fundraise the old- fashioned way without having to resort to money from pokies, says the Problem Gambling Foundation. It s just published a free booklet, Let s put the fun back into fundraising. Marketing and com- munications manager Andre ´ e Froude says it s all about encouraging organisations to stop using pokie revenue and get back to the tra- ditional ways of fund- raising. We want people to think about where the money comes from in the first place, she says. A lot of pokie money comes from people who can t afford it. The foundation some- times get calls from organisations with an ethical dilemma over whether they should apply for grants coming from gambling money, she says. The new booklet also offers other funding options. It was put together by the foundation s former research librarian Glenda Northey, and also includes information on community funding and tips on writing funding letters. Inside it lists a range of activities that can raise money -- from pan- cake races, plastic duck races and pet compe- titions to pantomime, three-legged races, egg throwing and compe- titions for worst holiday pictures. The foundation says New Zealand has 21,768 pokie machines and $5.6 million is gambled on them every day. Go to www.pgfnz.org.nz -- then library, then latest news -- to download the free Let's put the ''fun'' back into fundraising booklet or for information call Andre ´ e Froude on 369-0723.
