Kia ora to all of you who enjoyed Christmas but are now thinking about getting back into shape or – even better – who want to make 2011 the year to get into that exercise or new body. Kia kaha – I recom- mend you take action now. Once the year gets rolling it will be easier to just forget about those good intentions. So start how you intend to go on. I’m also getting an early start on fitness this year with pre-season training with the Warriors. The next three months are all about building a foundation. We will be slugging it out, hitting the gym, running up sand dunes – everything it takes to get fit. I’m looking after a few players who I reckon need to shed a few kilos. They are stuck with me, which is probably not too nice, because I will be pushing them hard. But, hey, I will be doing the same training andifIcandoitsocan they. ‘‘If you train hard, you play hard’’ – that’s my motto. And with the Anzac test in April being played in New Zealand for the first time, playing hard is definitely what it’s going to be all about. Having a clear goal in mind is always key to getting fit. Whatever level you are on, you need a goal and someone who can help you set and achieve it. You might not be plan- ning to train as hard as the Warriors – very few people will be – but you can take the first steps to achieving your goal now simply by setting one. If you call into one of Manukau Leisure’s Com- munity Gyms now they’ll help you take those first crucial steps and get you on the right path. They’ve got this great system where you get five free one-on-one sessions with a fitness instructor when you join. That means that you can get really comfort- able with the gym and what you’re doing before striking out on your own. You’ll have a clear pic- ture of your goals and will be given all the sup- port necessary. If you’re already in a gym or sports club, New Year is also a great time to get your family along. That way the whole thing keeps growing and the benefits of being fit and healthy keep flowing through our community. Just as important: Get the kids involved. School holiday programmes are running at all seven of Manukau Leisure’s rec- reation centres with activities for kids aged five to 13. They do things like riding flying foxes or playing on the aqua run in the local pool so they are happy while you get a break. The programmes are popular so check out what is still available – and definitely also look at what’s coming up in the term one recreation programmes. These start when school goes back. You can see all the details on the Manukau Leisure website. If you want to enrol in the Out of School Care (OSCAR) programme, Manukau Leisure can pick up your child from selected schools and take them to an afternoon’s activities and sports at the local recreation cen- tre. The OSCAR pro- gramme is eligible for a WINZ subsidy so check it out. But I don’t want to wish away the holidays on the kids just yet. I remember how that long summer holiday can be a high point in your life. Because I spent so many happy summers there I was really pleased when I saw that the new Norman Kirk Memorial Pools at the Otara Leisure Centre opened around Christ- mas. Now it’s an even better place to train or cool off or just hang-out. Enjoy as much of the summer as you can. Achieve in 2011 By BY DAVID KNEEBONE, SORTED MANAGER A new year provides the perfect opportunity to think about what you want to achieve in 2011 and make New Year resolutions to help you get there. Think about the differ- ent areas of your life – do you want to advance your career, get fit, spend more time with family or wipe your cre- dit card debt? Whatever your resol- utions are, it’s likely they will affect your bank bal- ance. Some resolutions will mean you have more money in your wallet, like giving up smoking or bypassing the work vending machine. If that’s the case, think about what you’ll do with the extra funds. You might be able to achieve more than one goal at once. Perhaps you could put the extra money towards saving for that first home deposit or paying off high interest debt. Some resolutions may cost you more, like pay- ing for music lessons if you want to take up an instrument. So you may have to put extra money aside each week to achieve your goal. Think outside the square and see if there are ways you can achieve your resolutions and be kind to your bank balance at the same time. Once you’ve decided on your resolutions, visit www.sorted.org.nz/ resolutions to write them down, then print them out. Stick them on your fridge or bedroom mir- ror. Seeing them every day will remind you of what you want to achieve, and help you stay motivated to make it happen.
