The addition of Hoki- anga now brings the number of Coastguard’s NowCasting broadcast- ing sites in the region to nine, allowing boaties to access real-time, spoken information on weather conditions at critical locations within the VHF radio coverage area and broadcasts the updates continuously on a range of marine VHF radio channels. The service provides up-to-the-minute local marine wind strength as well as the latest marine weather forecast, local tide times and heights and local safety messages as may be required. The Coastguard NowCasting service improves marine safety by providing mariners, both professional and recreational, with a con- tinuous weather infor- mation stream enabling them to make better decisions about com- mencing or continuing their journeys. Colin Small, president for Coastguard New Zea- land says this is a signifi- cant milestone for New Zealand. ‘‘We encourage boaties to make the most of this service to enhance their safety and enjoyment on the water,’’ he says. Coastguard Northern Region CEO, Dean Law- rence, says wind is the most critical factor to consider when judging sea conditions so Coast- guard uses automatic anemometers (a device which measures wind speed) positioned at vari- ous sites, which report wind strength and direc- tion every sixty seconds. ‘‘The wind data is received by a central computer and then broadcast in speech on VHF radio within seconds. The NowCast- ing project, initiated in the Northern Region, was the brainchild of one of Coastguard’s long serving volunteers, Kevin O’Sullivan. Expanding on this great work, Coastguard NowCasting has now rolled out across most of New Zealand. Extending the service to the Hoki- anga area is the final link in the chain for the Northern Region. ‘‘We would also like to acknowledge the generous support of the New Zealand Com- munity Trust (NZCT) for funding provided to com- plete the latest project which joins 18 existing broadcast sites already operated by Coastguard in Northland, Auckland, Kaipara, Raglan, Whitianga, Tairua, Whakatane/Tauranga, Hawkes Bay, New Ply- mouth, Wanganui, Nel- son, Cook Strait, Canter- bury, Otago and Southland. ‘‘The service makes boating for the 1.3 million New Zealanders who choose to spend their leisure time on the water significantly safer.’’ For a full list of Coast- guard NowCasting locations and channel information - visit www.coastguard.co.nz and download the map.
