Photo: JASON DORDAY Alternative cinema: An example of street cinema in Toronto where experimental films were screened. reels had to be changed every 10 minutes and being a non-union pro- jectionist was a danger- ous occupation. At that point one non- union projectionist was found dead floating in the Chicago River. I was terrified.'' All the while he shuttled back and forth between Canada and the United States, doing shows and expanding his collection of avant-garde films. I had to get to the next show, stay alive, get my cheque and cash it fast.'' But it was an exciting life too. People in places like New York didn't question things but small towns always had interesting audiences who were hungry for information. In 1995 he finally pulled the plug on touring because he felt more like a Hollywood distributor writing press releases and he was always pushing to get the next show. I didn't like what I'd become.'' But this year he's been back in the game, work- ing with Satellite Gallery and the Depot Artspace in Auckland in a Night Gallery experimental film series. And he's been busy creating his own films. He's shooting test shots around Manu- rewa in the lead-up to filming his new work The Sea of Songs.
