Good news: Peter Wedde informs Val Whitting that her pieces are valuable. Photos: FIONA GOODALL By NICOLA WILLIAMS Residents weren t the only treasures at a retirement vil- lage antique show. Television One s Auction House follows Peter Wedde on an antique roadshow throughout the country to document stories about art, artefacts and antiques going under the hammer. Mr Wedde paid a visit to Summerset by the Park in Flat Bush last week to enter- tain residents and visitors while giving them an insight into how much their prized possessions could be worth. The main reason for me to come here is to inform and entertain. I m always happy to come north of the Bombay Hills, I know you re a bit flash up here, Wellington-based Mr Wedde says. He says you never know when high value items will reveal themselves. The best things usually arrive in a shoebox wrapped in a tea towel and the person has no idea they are in pos- session of a treasure. Often the puffy person full of self-importance wanting me to vindicate their decision to buy the item finds out that it s not quite as smart as they thought it was, he says. People are always elated to learn they have something of value. He says some people with heirlooms are not interested in their value but in the historical context. For some there is never any question about it going to sale because it s going to be handed down. Resident Val Whitting was delighted to learn a pair of porcelain Japanese vases she had were worth $1800. I knew they were worth quite a bit but it s a nice sur- prise, she says.
