Photo: SIMON WATTS By MELISSA KINEALY A building project with a twist is benefiting people in wheelchairs and high school students. Aorere and Howick Colleges have joined forces with the Auckland Spinal Rehabilitation Unit in Otara to create planter boxes and an outdoor deck for patients to enjoy. Stage one of a bigger project saw five planter boxes designed by Howick College senior students and built by Aorere College pupils to count towards their NCEA. Papatoetoe 18-year- olds Sione Lapuaho and Mobeen Ali, from Aorere College, say they enjoyed getting familiar with tools and building the boxes. They spent around six weeks working on the project including lunch- times and after school. It s the first time I felt like I really got stuck in, Mobeen says. Spinal unit operations manager Marianne Cox says it s been an exciting project. It came about after she showed Counties Manu- kau District Health Board s recruitment of- ficer Matt Ponting around the unit and told him they wanted a deck space for the patients and families to enjoy. He went on to link the students to the building project through the Pathways to Employ- ment Trust. Tours of Middlemore Hospital and the spinal unit gave the students a feel for the need to design for health, Ms Cox says. And she anticipates the students fundraising next year will reach the $10,000 needed to build the deck that will house the new planter boxes.
