Photo: SHANE WENZLICK Pictures of Manurewa s his- tory are being painted around town. The town centre has been given a $30,000 grant from the Ministry of Justice for graffiti prevention. So the Manurewa Business Association commissioned mural artist Doug Ford who decided to paint scenes that depicted the town s history. The first mural to be fin- ished is outside Harcourts on Station Rd. Association chairwoman Angela Dalton says the build- ing used to be a hardware store so that s what the mural shows. We want to get back our sense of identity through the history of Manurewa, she says. Manurewa s longest serv- ing barber Ken Penny makes a special appearance in the mural as a blacksmith. Mr Penny has been cutting hair in the town since 1971. A lot of the locals stop and share their own stories of growing up in Manurewa with Mr Ford. One woman told a tale of a bull that got loose and crashed into what was to become Mr Penny s shop. Mr Ford is now working on a Botanic Gardens-themed piece and his next project will be by the post office. The association is hoping to have about 15 of the murals painted in the next few months.
