Photo: SIMON WATTS ' We've had to switch to a piling method where they fill the hole with polymer foam as they drill it to prevent it collapsing. ' Glen Maria, project manager DRIVERS are facing a sum- mer of road detours around south Auckland with Kiwi- Rail closing five bridges over the main trunk line. The overbridges in Papa- toetoe, Manurewa and Papa- kura are being knocked down and rebuilt as part of Auck- land s $1 billion rail electrifi- cation project. Papatoetoe project man- ager Glen Maria says the Bridge St and St George St overbridges will be demo- lished over three or four days from Boxing Day. Then pre-cast beams will be trucked in and lifted into place by crane. They get tendons threaded through them and then tensioned to tie them together into a solid deck. After that contractors will build the footpaths and ped- estrian barriers and lay the road surface. Bridge St should re-open at the end of January and St George St on January 17. There will still be some roadworks and finishing going on at St George St after that, Mr Maria says. Both Papatoetoe bridges will be slightly wider, higher and with slimmer decks giv- ing an extra 50cm clearance to allow electric trains to pass underneath. Bridge St s slightly wonky alignment will also be corrected and St George St will get cycle lanes in both directions. The bridges are also being future-proofed with extra room underneath for a third track. Demolition and rebuilding of the overbridges has been timed for the sixth annual shutdown of the Auckland rail network from Boxing Day to January 16. Motorists have already had a taste of what s to come with long delays and detours around preparatory works at both Papatoetoe overbridges. While St George St was ready early for the Boxing Day shutdown, it s down to the wire at Bridge St where unstable sandy ground has slowed work dramatically. We ve had to switch to a piling method where they fill the hole with polymer foam as they drill it to prevent it collapsing, Mr Maria says. Reinforced steel cages are then lowered into the holes in sections and concrete is pumped in, pushing the poly- mer upwards to be collected and stored for reuse. They ve had to do that for 10 piles going down 34 metres and 14 shorter ones. This week s tasks are to finish the retaining walls and pour the concrete abutment beams and settlement slab before demolition starts on Sunday. In Manurewa, Browns Rd overbridge is ready for demo- lition with new piling and a new footpath to Homai sta- tion. But scoria found behind the old bridge abutments at Sta- tion Rd meant it had to be closed for a fortnight until last Friday while contractors worked round the clock to fin- ish preparations. The Jutland Rd rail over- bridge in Manurewa has already been rebuilt and is open again to traffic.
