Sports stars up for awards Familiar faces and not so familiar names make up the list of finalists for this year s Counties Manukau Sport- ing Excellence Awards. The annual awards go to outstand- ing performance and service in sport by people from throughout Counties Manukau. Last year s supreme sporting excel- lence winner Valerie Adams is again in the running for the sportswoman of the year title. Rugby and New Zealand sevens players dominate the sportsman of the year award while rugby league mono- polises the top team category. Judges say the standard of entries was outstanding this year, making made the judging difficult. The quality of entries in the junior categories was particularly impressive and signal great times ahead for sport in Counties Manukau, the judges say. The finalists are: Sportsman of the Year: Aaron Heremaia, rugby league; Dean Couzins, hockey; DJ Forbes, rugby; Liaki Moli, rugby; Peter McGlashan, cricket; Sherwin Stowers, rugby; Tim Nanai Wil- liams, rugby. Excellence honoured Top guest: The legendary Tana Umaga is guest speaker at this year's awards dinner. The finalists for this year s Counties Manukau Sporting Excellence Awards have been chosen and their night of celebration is almost here. The annual awards laud outstand- ing performance and service in sport by sportspeople from throughout Counties Manukau. This year s gala awards dinner is on December 9 at Telstraclear Pacific Events Centre. Hosted by Counties Manukau Sport, it ll be a great chance to mix and mingle with some of Counties Manu- kau s elite sports stars. Doors open at 6pm with pre- ceremony drinks and canape ´s. The awards ceremony begins at 7pm and ends around 11pm. TV One s Geoff Bryan is MC and legendary All Black Tana Umaga is guest speaker. Talented students from Wymondley Road Primary School will perform a disco dance routine as part of the entertainment. Tickets are now on sale for $80 per person for sports clubs or schools or $1000 for a table of 10 for corporate businesses.
