Kelei Ataata, 47, has been sentenced to six months community detention and is to make reparations of $18,950 for dishonesty offences related to the care claimed for a disabled family member. Ataata pleaded guilty in the Manukau District Court. Her sentence included 12 months supervision, community work and budgeting counselling. Reparations are to be made at $50 per week. The court was told Ataata was party to actions to defraud the health system of $21,250 by dishonestly claiming carer support payments for her daughter since 2005. The care was later found not to have been provided. The Ministry of Health investigated the payments in September 2009 after it found anomalies with the claims. Carer support is a subsidy funded by the ministry and district health boards. It is designed to help the unpaid fulltime carer of a person with a disability to take a break. Ministry spokesman Michael Moore says it was the second success- ful fraud prosecution in almost as many days. It s very, very disappointing to see people again ripping off the system to the detri- ment of others. Offend- ing of this type takes money from families who have a real need for carer support. Fraud will not be tolerated. We do monitor and we do check payments. Where we suspect the misuse of funds, we will investi- gate and bring offenders to justice. If people falsely claim and dishonestly use documents to steal money intended for health and disability services, they will be caught and punished, Mr Moore says. Call 0800-424-888 if you suspect misuse of health and disability funds. Cash & Cheques in a flash! Do you have an unex- pected bill to pay, such as car repairs? Or maybe you have received a refund cheque and need the money now, not in five working days? Look no further than Cash & Cheques! Situated in both Manukau and One- hunga, the friendly staff can cash most refund cheques from the Minis- try of Justice, Inland Revenue and most power companies, including Mercury and Contact. All you need to bring is photo ID such as a driver s licence or pass- port, and current proof of address such as a phone bill. The fee is 7.5 percent of the cheque s value -- so if you were to cash a $140 cheque, you would walk away with $130 in hand. Cash & Cheques friendly team at the Manukau and Onehunga branches will only cash cheques from a regis- tered business which have been made payable to you. Manager Lorraine Robinson says they will not cash any cheque without photo ID and proof of residential address. Sorry, we don t make any exceptions. No ID, no cash, she says. Unfortunately some- times a refusal may offend, but we need to make sure people are not being fraudulent and cashing stolen cheques, adds Lorraine. Cash & Cheques also offers a payday advance service, with no credit checks or security required. This service provides loans up to $200 to assist with unexpected bills. For people who have a proven credit record with the company, cash advances up to $500 are available. All advances must be paid back over the next month by direct debit. To get an advance on your wages or salary, you will need to provide your bank statements for the last three months, and three sets of ID, including proof of your residential address. Getting cash in a flash is as easy as 1-2-3 -- thanks to the friendly team at Cash & Cheques. Cash & Cheques is located at Shop 16 Westfield Mall, Manukau, phone 262-2600; and Shop 2, 2 Pearce St, Onehunga, phone 636-3015. Both branches are open 9am to 5pm Monday- Friday; Saturday hours: Manukau 9am to 12 noon and Onehunga 10am to 12 noon.
