Anyone wanting to know more about the electrifi- cation of Auckland s rail- way network can find out at an open day tomorrow. KiwiRail and Auck- land Transport will be explaining the electrifi- cation project and how it will affect travel over the summer holidays. Buses will replace trains around much of Auckland over Christmas and New Year when large sections of the rail network will be closed to trains. The shutdown will allow preparatory works including the replace- ment of rail overbridges to create space for masts and overhead wires to carry power to the new electric trains. The overhead wires will start appearing first along the western line from early next year. KiwiRail has until 2013 to get ready for electric trains to start running on the network from Papakura to Swanson. The $1 billion Auck- land rail electrification project includes a new signalling system, putting up 3500 masts to carry overhead wires, rebuilding 24 overb- ridges, and buying a new fleet of electric trains. The open day runs from 10am to 3pm at Newmarket railway sta- tion. See www.kiwirail.gov- t.nz for more on electrifi- cation. See www.maxx.co.nz for replacement bus services when trains aren t running.
