LIMITED STOCK WHAT A BARGAIN! World cup projects backed by keen mayor Auckland mayor Len Brown is putting his weight behind a handful of key Rugby World Cup 2011 projects as part of his 100 projects in 100 days. Mr Brown says he recog- nises the benefits the world cup will provide across Auck- land well beyond the final whistle and he's keen to ensure that the hard work that has been put in over the past three years is recognised and continues. The projects he's identified that can benefit most from his support include: Wynyard Quarter Gate- way Plaza The Gateway Plaza in the central city is one of a suite of Wynyard Quarter develop- ments which will be com- pleted in time for the world cup. The plaza will be an open public space in the area just beyond where the Wynyard Crossing interim bridge will link the Viaduct Harbour with Wynyard Quar- ter, Jellicoe St, North Wharf promenade and the Viaduct Events Centre. The mayor attended a groundbreaking ceremony at dusk last Thursday. Rugby World Cup Stadium walk up The stadium walk up is a themed walking route packed with activity and entertain- ment which will run from Auckland's CBD waterfront to Eden Park. The walk-up will terminate at the Wairepo Swamp Walk, which was built specifically as a shortcut for pedestrians heading to the park. The lane is also an example of Auckland Council's shared space initiative. Mr Brown will officially open the lane on December 4. World cup training venues Auckland's Western Springs Stadium has been upgraded so it can be used as a world cup training venue. Both the Samoa and Tonga teams will use it and it will enable fans to get close to the teams . The upgrade is one of a number of training venue upgrades across Auckland which will leave a positive legacy for the community. Mr Brown will open the Western Springs training venue on December 14. Auckland International Airport The new departures lounge at Auckland International Airport -- one of the last stages of the airport's upgrade before the world cup -- will be opened on December 15. The new Novotel hotel next to the international ter- minal is due to open in April. Mr Brown says Auckland is ready to be the hub of the world cup. From the completion of Eden Park's redevelopment to transport and waterfront upgrades charging ahead, Auckland's preparations are well on track,'' he says. I'm keen to add my weight to world cup projects across Auckland.'' It's a one-off opportunity to showcase Auckland, he says.
