Day all about safety Going for a ride: Kids from Otara kohanga reo take part in activities designed to teach them about being safe at the Mokopuna 274 Day. Photo: SHANE WENZLICK By JESSIE COLQUHOUN At least six tamariki are hospitalised for an uninten- tional injury each day. So playing and keeping safe was the theme at a recent community event in Otara. More than 300 kids from Te Kura Kaupapa o Piripono Te Kura Whakahou and sev- eral kohanga reo came together for the Mokopuna 274 Day -- the first whanau event held at the school. The event combined child safety and Maori language with the aim of making safety messages fun and promoting whanau values. School students stood at stations and helped the preschoolers safely take part in games such as sack jump- ing and water activities. ACC spokeswoman Hine- amaru Ropati says giving safety information to parents and grandparents from the kohanga reo is important because of the number of preschoolers involved in accidents. Between 2001 and 2005 each year an average of 35 Maori children die from an unintentional injury. They make up 42.4 percent of all child unintentional injury deaths in New Zealand. Several organisations had demonstration tents for parents and grandparents to teach them about child safety including treating burns and water safety. Each organis- ation also had te reo speakers to help communicate with the kura kaupapa and kohanga reo community. This is our way of getting those messages across,'' Ms Ropati says. Acting principal Peata Leef says the day was also import- ant to help the transition to school of children leaving the eight Otara kohanga reo.
