He has announced three new initiatives to better prepare Auckland for civil emergencies. They include the development of neigh- bourhood and com- munity emergency pre- paredness plans, a plan to give social media a key role in emergency pre- paredness and the announcement of a major regional Civil Defence exercise early next year. Auckland does not have neighbourhood or community Civil Defence plans which is a serious weakness in the city's emergency prepared- ness, Mr Brown says. He wants all com- munities to have their own plans. It will obviously take some time to implement this across Auckland but to begin with eight com- munities will have their own plans within 100 days of the birth of the Auckland Council.'' He also wants to give social media a key role in emergency prepared- ness. Social media channels such as Facebook and Twitter and e-learning are a great way to raise awareness and prepared- ness for emergencies. Hundreds or thou- sands of Aucklanders use these tools every day -- we cannot ignore social media as we reach out to our people to better pre- pare them for emerg- encies.'' A major Auckland- wide Civil Defence exer- cise will be held early next year with the coun- cil to announce details soon. Auckland may not be as prone to earthquakes as other parts of the country but there are many other kinds of emergency -- tsunami, volcanic eruption or whatever -- that we need to be ready for.''
