South Auckland posties are trialling new ways of carrying more parcels. Cycle trailers carry- ing mail hitched to bikes, a new style of bike and larger mailbags can be seen around some of the dis- trict's streets. They're part of a trial running until January 2011 to give posties more carrying capacity. The trial's being run in the area bounded by Mangere Bridge to East Tamaki, and Otahuhu to Manukau. It involves 40 posties from the Hunters Cor- ner delivery branch in Papatoetoe. Postal delivery man- ager Matthew Riordan says NZ Post is gearing up to carry and deliver more parcels. While standard let- ter volumes are declin- ing, New Zealand Post is expecting parcel volumes to grow by 5 to 10 percent each year from 2011 due to increasing use of online shopping and mail order catalogues.'' South Auckland was chosen because it has a large postie workforce and the network infra- structure to support the trial. It follows a similar trial in Palmerston North in April. In south Auckland, 98 percent of posties deliver mail on bikes. The rest walk or use a motorbike. Commuters hop on the bus New figures showing more Aucklanders are using public transport have been welcomed by mayor Len Brown. Aucklanders continue to disprove the belief that they will not get out of their cars,'' he says. It's great to see the continued increase in use of public transport.'' The total number of public transport passen- ger trips in August was up 7.8 percent on the same month last year. The number of bus trips rose 7 percent and rail journeys jumped 17.2 percent. At 842,000 trips that's the second highest monthly rail patronage ever recorded. More than 8.7 million passenger trips were made on the rail network in the year to August, up 13 percent on the year before. I was elected on a clear mandate to deliver better public transport solutions across our region. It was the number one issue at the elec- tion,'' Mr Brown says. My council will be dedicated to making sub- stantial progress on Auckland's transport issues, including an underground CBD rail loop, rail to the airport and planning for the sec- ond harbour crossing. The reason the super- city was established was to deliver on big infra- structure projects and give government a clear signal about what the region's priorities are.''
