Revenue Minister Peter Dunne says the limited revenue raised through gift duty is outweighed by the $70 million a year in com- pliance costs. There is a broad range of other existing legislation that will pro- vide adequate protection to mitigate the identified risks following the abol- ition of gift duty. Legislation will be introduced to Parliament this month. It will be effective from October 1 next year. Thanks a Bunch: Lise Alapati handed in money left accidentally at an ATM. Photo: MELISSA KINEALY This week's Thanks a Bunch goes to Lise Alapati from Manurewa, who is nominated by Denis Whittington. Denis writes: ''Last week my daughter withdrew money from a bank ATM in Manurewa, but was distracted and left the cash behind. ''On returning to the bank the money predictably had gone and the bank was closed. ''The next day she returned to the bank not expecting too much but was stunned to find the money had been handed in by Lise. ''On phoning her with my thanks I was overcome with her humility at doing a good deed for someone less fortunate. ''I will never forget her, she deserves all the good fortune that comes her way.''
