Cooking up a batch of hard-won medals Two talented Manukau teenagers have not only broken into the job mar- ket but have become medallists in the New Zealand Culinary Fare through a career-launch programme run by the Auckland Chamber of Commerce. Dominico Olafai and Toni Thompson are em- ployed at the CityLife, a Heritage Auckland hotel, under the CadetMax pro- gramme. The programme has helped them to be job ready and go on to further vocational train- ing. For Dom and Toni that means studying as mod- ern apprentices through the Hospitality Stand- ards Institute. CadetMax is an em- ployment programme run by the chamber to find career-launch oppor- tunities for talented 16 to 19-year-olds. It trains and prepares them for the workforce and then places them in cadetships and encour- ages them to work towards a qualification or attend external courses that will in- crease their skills. Toni, who also took part in the Culinary Fare competition last year, won two bronze medals for her front-of- house skills and Dom, who has now been promoted from kitchen hand to commis chef, gained a bronze for his kitchen skills. CadetMax programme manager Leah Gates is proud of the cadets and is hopeful for their future with the New Zealand- wide hotel chain. CityLife Auckland has been an amazing supporter of the Cadet- Max programme and is committed to training and career develop- ment,'' she says. The hotel has been involved in CadetMax for several years. It hosts regular site visits for the cadets and has played a part in launching many of them in the hospitality industry. Toni says the excite- ment of the site visit inspired her to take on her new career. Dom's father, a chef with 20 years' experi- ence, is now studying at the institute alongside his son to gain the paper- work to backup his experience. I think he just wanted to see what he knows,'' Dom says. Contact Ms Gates on 263-8841 or lgates@ chamber.co.nz.
